Claude Chat — The Beginner's Handbook
Most people use about a fifth of Claude. Not because the rest is difficult, but because it sits behind menus they have never opened, and because nobody told them the handful of habits that separate a disappointing answer from a useful one. This handbook covers both, in 42 pages you can read in one sitting.
What you get
- 42-page PDF, 18 chapters, designed to be read straight through
- The five habits that fix most bad answers, plus ten ordinary requests rewritten before and after
- The parts of the product people miss: projects, memory, incognito, artifacts, connectors, and the skills that produce real Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF files
- A field guide to the twelve moments people give up, with the fix for each
- Four complete pieces of real work, start to finish
- A first-week checklist, a one-page cheat sheet and a glossary
- The same text as Markdown, so you can paste sections into Claude and apply them to your own work
- grill-me — a working Claude skill that makes Claude interview you before it builds anything, with install instructions
Works with
- Claude on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise — the handbook says which features need which plan
- Web, desktop and mobile
- No coding, no setup, nothing to install to read it
One licence, personal and client work, forever. No resale.
This is a handbook for someone who has opened Claude, typed something, and had the nagging sense that other people are getting more out of it. They usually are, and the reason is rarely intelligence. It is that they learned five or six specific habits, and that they know which parts of the product exist.
The half that is technique
Chapter 3 is the one that changes results. The most common cause of a weak answer is not that Claude cannot do the work, it is that the request left decisions unmade — audience, format, length, tone, purpose — which a human colleague would have asked about and a model will instead guess at. Chapter 4 then takes ten ordinary requests and shows each one rewritten, so the pattern is copyable rather than abstract.
The half that is the product
Projects and what to put in them. Memory, and how to read and correct what Claude thinks it knows about you. Incognito, and precisely what it does and does not hide. Artifacts. Connectors and the permission model you should understand before connecting anything. And the chapter most readers get the most from: the skills that turn a request into a real Word document, a spreadsheet with live formulas, an editable deck or a searchable PDF — and the six words most people never say that unlock them.
What it does not do
It does not pretend Claude is always right. One chapter is about where it is wrong, why fabrication is most likely exactly where you are least able to check it, and what to do about that. Any guide that skips this is selling something.
How current is it?
Every claim about how Claude behaves was checked against Anthropic's published documentation in September 2026, and the plan and pricing details are a snapshot from that date. Software moves; the habits do not.
Is this for developers?
No. It assumes no coding, no terminal and no prior use of an AI assistant. Claude Code is a different product and is not covered here.
