PopMirror is a small menu bar app that turns the Mac's front camera into a mirror. One click on the mirror icon drops down a live, mirrored view of the camera, and a click anywhere else puts it away. It suits anyone who wants to check their hair, collar or lighting before a video call without opening a video app.

What you get

  • PopMirror.app, a universal build for Apple silicon and Intel Macs
  • README.txt with install steps, and LICENSE.txt
  • One 0.8 MB zip

Works with

  • macOS 13 Ventura or later
  • The built-in FaceTime camera, external webcams and Continuity Camera
  • Light and dark mode

One licence, personal and client work, forever. No resale.

First launch: PopMirror is signed and notarized by Apple, so it opens with a normal double-click.

PopMirror puts a mirror icon in the Mac menu bar. One click drops down a live, mirrored view of the front camera, and a click anywhere else puts it away again, with the camera switched off.

Check before you join

Hair, collar, lighting and background, checked in a second before a call starts, without opening a video app or joining a meeting early.

One click away

The mirror opens right under its icon and closes when the pointer clicks anywhere else or the icon is clicked again.

Lives in the menu bar

There is no Dock icon and no window to manage. A right-click on the icon offers the mirror size, the camera to use, mirroring and Open at Login.

Pick a size

Small for a glance, medium or large for a proper look. PopMirror remembers the choice.

Camera off when closed

The camera runs only while the mirror is open, so the green camera light goes out the moment it closes. Nothing is recorded, saved or sent anywhere.

How it works

  • Left-click the mirror icon opens the camera, mirrored. Clicking the icon again, or anywhere else on screen, closes it and switches the camera off.
  • Right-click the icon, or Control-click it, for the menu: Open Mirror; the size, Small, Medium or Large; the camera to use when more than one is connected; Mirror Image; Open at Login; About; and Quit.
  • The green camera light is on only while the mirror is open.

Opening it the first time

PopMirror is signed and notarized by Apple, so it opens with a normal double-click.

Which cameras does it work with?

The built-in FaceTime camera, USB webcams and, on macOS 14 Sonoma or later, an iPhone through Continuity Camera. When more than one camera is connected, the right-click menu lists them all.

Does it need special permissions?

Only camera access, which macOS asks for the first time the mirror opens. It never asks for Accessibility, screen recording or Full Disk Access.

Does it connect to the internet?

No. There is no account and no tracking, and the camera image never leaves the Mac.

Which Macs does it run on?

Any Mac with Apple silicon or Intel running macOS 13 Ventura or later.
