Menu Bar Managers on macOS 27: What Still Works

macOS 27 Golden Gate shipped on 14 September 2026, and it took most menu bar managers with it. Apple rebuilt the menu bar, and the technique these apps relied on to find and move other applications' status items no longer works.

This is not a rumour. Bartender's own compatibility page describes Apple's changes as unrecoverable and says the app had to be rebuilt from the ground up — it no longer moves items by taking over your mouse, and it can now run with no screen recording permission at all. Ice's issue tracker carries a report titled for exactly this, with the developer's approach described as one that does not carry over.

This page is written by the developer of MenuFold, so read it accordingly. Prices below were read from each vendor's own checkout on 19 September 2026, not copied from a roundup.

What works today

Bartender 7 works, and it is the most capable app in this category by a wide margin. It is also the only one that had a rebuilt version ready the day Golden Gate shipped.

MenuFold works. I tested it on macOS 27 on 19 September 2026: the chevron folds the icons away and a second click brings them back, same as on 26.

Ice does not. Its issue tracker has an open report of the app failing on Golden Gate, and a separate open issue asking whether the project has been abandoned. The last stable release was 0.11.12 in October 2024 — nearly two years ago — and there is no maintainer reply on either thread.

Hidden Bar is also reported broken. Its App Store listing's last clearly dated update is from 2021.

Bartender 7 — $25, or $17.39 a year, or $80 once

Three ways to pay, and the difference matters more than the headline price:

$25.00 one time buys Bartender 7 and every update to version 7. A future Bartender 8 would be a separate purchase.

$17.39 a year for Bartender Pro adds the Top Shelf suite and, critically, all future major upgrades while you keep paying.

$80.00 once for Mega Supporter — currently marked as a launch discount — is lifetime access including Pro and every future version.

For that you get things nothing else here offers: a second Bartender Bar for overflow items, triggers that reveal an icon only when it changes, menu bar widgets, profiles that switch layout per context, search across your menu bar items, and hotkeys for individual icons.

If you want menu bar management as a serious tool, buy Bartender. It is the deepest app in the category and the one whose developer shipped a ground-up rewrite on time. That is worth $25.

The free options, honestly

Ice was the answer everyone gave after 2024, and on macOS 26 it was a genuinely good one — free, open source under the GPL, with its own Ice Bar and a third always-hidden section. On macOS 27 it does not work, and the release history does not suggest a fix is coming soon.

Hidden Bar is the minimal option: one divider, drag to arrange, an auto-hide timer. Free and open source. Also reported broken on 27, and effectively unmaintained since 2021.

Newer projects have appeared specifically because of this breakage. If you want free and are willing to run something young, they are worth looking at — but check the release date before you install anything, because this category is currently full of apps that stopped working five days ago.

Where MenuFold fits

MenuFold is $4.99 and does one thing. There is a chevron in your menu bar; click it and the icons to its left fold away, click again and they come back.

Animation: a pointer clicks the MenuFold chevron in an enlarged menu bar, the icons left of the thin line slide away and the chevron turns to point left, then a second click brings every icon back

You decide what folds by dragging icons past a line on first run, with Command held, the same gesture macOS already uses for rearranging the menu bar.

It can fold itself again after a few seconds, or when you click elsewhere, so you are not managing the manager.

What it does not do: no second bar, no triggers, no widgets, no profiles, no search, no per-icon hotkeys. If you want any of those, the honest answer is Bartender, and this paragraph is where you should stop reading.

So, which one

You want the full toolkit and it is worth paying for: Bartender 7 at $25, or Mega Supporter at $80 if you would rather never think about upgrades again.

You want free and you are on macOS 26 or earlier: Ice is still good there. On 27, wait.

You just want the clutter gone for the price of a coffee: MenuFold is $4.99 on 1dot1.
